Why halfbottle?

For people that want to drink better.

Four 375ml wines to your door every month. More variety, less waste, and a perfectly reasonable answer when someone asks how much you drank last night.

halfbottle is a UK wine subscription built around the half bottle: 375ml, two to three glasses, one very good excuse to open something different. It’s run by the team at King Street Cellar, an independent wine merchant in Cambridge.

Because one bottle was never really the right size

Nobody sat down and decided 750ml was the perfect amount of wine. It was maths. Somewhere in the history of Bordeaux, someone worked out that their 225 liter barrel filled 300 750ml bottles exactly. A unit of trade became a unit of culture.

Which is a shame, because 375ml is actually a far more sensible unit. Enough to properly get to know a wine. Not so much that you feel duty-bound to finish it.

The Tuesday night problem, solved

You know the one. It's a weeknight. You fancy a glass of wine. You open a full bottle, have one glass, put the stopper in, and spend the next three days in a quiet negotiation with yourself about finishing it before it turns.

A half bottle doesn't have this problem. You open it, you drink it, you're done. No guilt. No sad leftover wine slowly oxidising on the counter. No pretending it's still fine on day four when it very obviously isn't.

White with the starter. Red with the main.

If you've ever tried to pair wine properly at home, you'll know the problem: open two full bottles and you wake up wondering what happened, or you compromise and drink the same wine with everything and quietly feel like you've failed.

Half bottles solve this rather neatly. Open the white. Enjoy the white. Open the red. Enjoy the red. Have a Sauternes with the cheese if you're feeling ambitious. Everyone gets the right glass at the right moment.

Every halfbottle box comes with pairing recommendations for each wine, so you're not guessing. You're just enjoying.

The gift that says "I know what I'm doing"

A half bottle subscription makes a cracking gift. Not because it's impressive (though it is), but because it's genuinely useful: the sort of thing people would never buy themselves but immediately wonder how they lived without.

Four bottles a month. Mixed, all red, or all white. Arriving when they're not expecting it, which is honestly the best time for wine to arrive. It's the gift for the person who has everything and also really loves wine. Which, let's be honest, is most people.

Got questions?

A few questions we get asked

How many glasses are in a half bottle of wine?
A 375ml bottle, what's called a half bottle, pours roughly two to three standard glasses, or two generous ones. It's the right amount for one person with dinner, or two people having a glass each.
What's the difference between a half bottle and a standard bottle?
A standard bottle of wine is 750ml. A half bottle is 375ml, exactly half. Same wine, half the volume, all the flavour. It means you can open more than one in an evening without committing to a full bottle of each.
What's included in a halfbottle subscription?
Four 375ml bottles per month, delivered to your door. Your first box is £37.50, then £47.50 per month. You choose Mixed, Red, or White. We choose the wines: independents, interesting producers, things worth getting excited about.

Four bottles. Four wines. One very reasonable decision.

£37.50 first box, £47.50 a month after. Cancel whenever. No fuss, no commitment, no sad leftover wine.
